Our mission is to profitably produce cattle that will thrive in our environment and result in healthy, delicious beef. We have decades of experience and leverage the natural potential of our productive soils and forages. We expect our cattle to be high performers in the pasture and while being finished - arriving at the end point with abundant marbling and muscle. Our financial focus includes a relentless determination to reduce our costs, while achieving our desired long-term return on invested capital.
- Desirable EPDs for calving ease, growth, adequate milk, fertility, moderate size, marbling and muscle (CW and REA).
- Uncompromising standards for phenotype. Sharp-fronted, heavy-muscled, easy-moving, square-made...bold-sprung.
- We always seek sires who can improve our herd for feet, legs, docility and the ability to shed off on fescue.
- We are a grazing operation, pure and simple. We prefer not to feed cattle anytime other than prior to harvest.
- We calve during a 45-day season from about September 15th to November 1st.
- Hay feeding is minimized to the extent possible after stockpiled forage is grazed.
- Virtually all weaned heifers born in the first 30 days of the calving season are kept as replacements. Replacement females are developed by grazing - we don't throw feed at them other than a little supplement before and after breeding. Open heifers and late breds are sorted after preg checking to be marketed. We have found this low-cost method of developing replacements has essentially eliminated depreciation in our cowherd and let nature select the females capable of thriving in our environment.
- We routinely achieve conception rates of 80%+ on yearling heifers and 98%+ on mature cows.
- Females who do not conceive in a 45-day breeding season are culled - either to the sale barn or sold to other breeders with a bit later calving window than us.
